I’m looking for the fastest and easiest way to travel to Bayeux once we arrive in Paris. How is the drive if we get a rental car? Is it all highway driving? If we don’t drive, what are our other options? Thanks in advance for your help.
Assuming you are arriving from N America on an overnight flight, embarking on a 180 mile 3+ hour drive is probably not in the category labeled "good idea"
Taking a train and renting a car at Caen or Bayeau would be a much better idea.
Apart from a private helicopter, train is likely the 'fastest and easiest'
I'll agree with Joe. If arriving on a flight from North America, a drive on unfamiliar roads and highways in potentially heavy traffic for part of the way? While jet lagged? 3 1/2 to 4+ hrs worth of really bad idea. Consider instead taking a taxi to Gare St Lazare (flat fee €58 in official taxi) and then the train to Caen (direct train about 2 ish hours). Pick up your rental car there. About 30 minutes drive from Caen to Bayeux.
Fastest and easiest is train from Gare Saint-Lazare train station. If you drive, it is all highway, but the periphery roads around Paris can be bad traffic—particularly anywhere near rush hour. Once you are free and heading North of the city it is usually fine. A lot also depends on from where you pick up your car.
Appreciate your responses. Yes we are coming from N America and were worried about the long drive.
Not hard to take official taxi -lots of scammers at the airport trying to get you to go to an unofficial line- to Paris Gare St Lazare then to Bayeux via train . You can buy the ticket on the app once you're at the station.
Train is super easy to Bayeau and we found taxis right at station in Bayeau that took us to our bed and breakfast. Not sure about car rental in Bayeau as we only walked around city and did a Normandy tour which picked us up and dropped off at our B an B. advice about official taxi stand is spot on, many scammers just be assertive and will have no problems. Advice not to drive there is spot on. My son drove after five days in Paris and Said it was fine driving the roads but never would have done it after a flight. Enjoy your trip.
Has anybody done direct from Paris airport to Bayiex via car/van? While pricey, it does seem the easiest

Did you read the previous posts? It may be easiest if:
-you aren't coming off a long haul flight and are subject to jet lag which can affect your driving as badly as alcohol
-you are familiar with European traffic laws and will have your IDP
- you are familiar with the level of traffic congestion that you are likely to experience on the Peripherique.
- you know how the highway tolls work.
-your Bayeux accommodation has parking. Not all do.
- you have a reliable GPS, or your French is good enough to understand the nav system in the rental.
Other than that, it's just a 4 hour drive.
Has anybody done direct from Paris airport to Bayiex via car...
I have driven from both CDG and Paris proper. Both were fairly easy, but the cautions about jet lag are very warranted. If you do this after a long-haul flight, make sure the other people in the car are active participants helping to navigate, watch the traffic and keep you alert. This isn't the time for anyone else in the car to doze off because someone else is driving. For what it is worth, I now almost always take a train from Gare Saint-Lazare to Normandy.
CJean, I think the reference to car/van in the OP’s latest message is to a hired car service with driver.
Slate, that could be. My mind reading ability seems to be off today.
goldberry17 is not the OP if that matters.
If you’re going to Bayeux to see the tapestry the museum is closed until 2027 and the tapestry is in the British Museum starting in September 2026.
