Travel from Mont St Michel to Giverny?

We will be staying at Mont St Michel in May for a day or two, then want to visit Giverny for a day before our final stop in Paris. I've been checking train/bus combinations to see whether it is best to travel through Caen or Rouen, or just go straight to Paris and visit Giverny from there.
If anyone is familiar with the French rail system, your advice would be most welcome.

The logical rail routes from Mont saint Michel to Paris do not pass by Giverny, it will be much easier to visit as a day trip from Paris. And that way you will not have any luggage to deal with.
By the way, one day is enough in Mont Saint Michel.

To be more specific, the standard ways to travel from Mont Saint Michel to Paris are:
- bus from the Mont to Rennes (operated by KEOLIS ARMOR), then TGV high-speed train to Paris (Gare Montparnasse)
- on some days, direct trains operate from Pontorson (10km from Mont Saint Michel, there are shuttles) to Paris (Gare Montparnasse). I do not know if it will be the case in May.

MSM and Giverny are on total opposites ends of Normandy. It is odd they are even in the same region. Almost any route I see between the two other than driving involves going through Paris—not with Paris as a "final stop." As always, got to Google Maps, or rome2rio.com for suggested routes.
