Travel from Marseilles to Portofino?

Hi all,

We are doing a Plan B as we were scheduled to spend a few days in Venice. We are looking at possibly driving from Marseilles to Portofino. Is this even possible? Is there a better way to do this, such as driving from Marseilles to Nice, then take the train to Portofino? Any insight would be so appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

  • You certainly can drive, but dropping off the car in a different country is expensive (as is parking in Portofino itself), if you're not returning to France.
  • You can take trains as far as S Margherita Ligure, then the last bit by bus, ferry, or hike.
  • A combination also works, although Marseille-Nice is easy by train if you just want to go straight there, rather than meander through inland Provence. The trains on the Italian side are a bit slower, but still a typical way to travel. So I'm not sure there's any benefit to breaking it up this way.

Looking Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the Deutsche Bahn train schedule link and tips for using it (does not sell tickets for these routes). All schedules currently published through Dec. 14, and some later.

I would take the bus from Marseille to Genova (Flixbus plies the route several times a day); and a train+bus for the last leg to Portofino. It will be faster by several hours than train all the way, and will involve fewer transfers as I believe that the Marseille-Genova-Milan train does not run at this time of the year.
