Travel from Le Havre cruise port to Honfleur

Our cruise ship will be in the Le Havre port on Monday, July 18, 2016 from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. What is the best way to get to Honfleur to spend the day. Also, any other suggestions, not Paris, on where to go in this area?
Thank you.

Here's a summary from the intro to that chapter in Rick's Northern European Cruise Ports guidebook:

Arrival at a Glance: Ride a cruise-line shuttle bus or walk about 35 minutes from the port to the train/bus station; from there, connect to Paris (2.5 hours by train), Rouen (1 hour by train), or Honfleur (30 minutes by bus).

Bus Connections: From Le Havre’s bus station, buses #20, #39, and #50 go over the Normandy Bridge to Honfleur (4-6/day Mon-Sat, 2/day on Sun, 30 minutes, www.busverts.fr). Bus #39 continues on to Caen (1-2/day, 1.5 hours total; otherwise you can reach Caen by a slower train connection via Rouen).

You can buy bus and train tickets in the station. The Tourist Information office at the port has schedules and advice. How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it.

When we were in LeHavre off an H America cruise ship. The ship provided a shuttle that looped the downtown area including stops at bus and train stations. We spent the day in Etretat. It was a lovely two hour bus ride through the country side. The bus to Etretat took a completely different route to Etretat than the return bus. The return bus came down the coast while the outbound bus when through the country side. About two hours each way. One of the few times we really could have used a little more French. Had the feeling that Etretat didn't see many English speaking tourists.

We recently returned from a cruise that also stopped in Le Havre, wandered the city and then walked to the train station just in time for the 12:30 bus (it's about a 20 minute walk or you can get a bus to the train station (from just outside the port gates) - and found that the buses to Honfleur were fully booked. We should have known better! A better idea (and what we did in the past) is go directly to the train station, early in the day, to buy the ticket - THEN wander - and return to the station at least half an hour before the bus goes to get in line, as they do fill up (note that the ticket is simply to Honfleur, not for a specific bus). Oh well, we still had a lovely day in Le Havre, where there is a lovely museum (Malraux) , cathedral and, of course, lunch…
