We don't have a set schedule in France yet, but are thinking about ending our stay in Normandy region. Any suggestions for getting to England from this area? Our travel is in mid May, 2015. Many thanks.
What city/town are you ending your stay in Normandy? It is a large region of France.
We have used both the Eurostar Paris to London, and Brittany Ferry Portsmouth to Quistreham (the port town near Caen). Check out www.seat61.com for Eurostar bargains but that usually means a trip into Paris which is easily done on local trains. We've taken the early train from Caen or Bayeux to Paris (about 2 hours) and caught the Eurostar afternoon train to London (about 2.5 hours). We once took the ferry but it's around 6 hours port to port and then a bus ride to and from the Caen railroad station. Sometimes rough channel weather cancels the ferry. Eurostar tickets are on sale NOW so you need to decide before all the bargain tickets are gone. We now routinely take the Eurostar round trip between London and Paris and book our tickets at 6 months prior to travel when they go on sale.
The only train option is into Paris, changing stations, then connecting to Eurostar at Paris Gare du Nord. From this point, the Eurostar gets you to downtown London faster than flying. http://www.seaviewferries.co.uk/countries-of-departure/detail/france is a pretty comprehensive ferry finder.
Many thanks for all the replies. We are still setting up our trip- but thinking now of staying in Paris and a day trip to Normandy with a guide for the WWII sites. So the Eurostar from Paris to London seems like the easiest route to take.
