What is the best way to get from England over to Dunkirk, France? We will rent a car once we get to either Calais or Dunkirk

If the departure is London and the destination is Calais, then the Eurostar.

The Eurostar leaves from St. Pancras Station in London.

How many is "we"? From where in England?
I know that you have an interest in Canadian battle monuments. Which war? Is that why you want to get to Dunkirk? Where will you be going after crossing the Channel?
There are problems renting a car in Calais, even more in Dunkirk. That's why I ask. Easiest would be right at the Lille Europe station from the Eurostar from London, but there are considerations there too.
A bit more meat on the bones please.
