As a family of 5, we plan to take the train from Paris to Caen to visit the museum, but need to get from Caen to Bayeux that same day to get to our hotel. The train does not seem to accommodate our schedule. Would a taxi be available to drive us or an Uber or private car service?
Trains run quite frequently, though I do see a 2-hour gap in the middle of the afternoon. Are you sure the place you're checking shows all the trains? Don't use RailEurope. Try the Deutsche Bahn (which I find easiest for schedule-checking) or SNCF. Almost all the trains between Caen and Bayeux are TERs (regionals), so there's no reason to buy tickets in advance.
The Peace Museum in Caen is about 2 miles out of the center. There's a city bus making the run; the schedule might be very infrequent on Sundays/holidays and should in any case be checked in advance. You may want to take a taxi to and from the museum, especially if you arrive and/or depart by train. The train station is on the opposite side of town from the museum.
It's about 17 miles from the museum to Bayeux; the museum is sort of in the direction of Bayeux, which helps a bit. I have no idea how much that trip would cost in a taxi; you'd be paying for the full 34-mile round-trip. I don't remember seeing taxis hanging out at the museum, though I wasn't looking for one. I imagine you'd need to call one. Normally a kind staffer at your destination will do that for you, but the museum tends to be extremely busy, and I'm not sure you'd find someone to do that for you.
I don't know anything about Uber.
Hi, just a logistics question - do you have a plan for your luggage while you’re at Caen? I don’t remember a luggage storage at their train station.
We stayed overnight at Caen and really enjoyed their museum. We took their minivan tour in the morning and then walked through the museum in the afternoon.
Thank you- great points about the luggage and making sure i am looking at local train schedules. We have been before but rented a car in Paris and drove, which obviously gave us the ultimate flexibility. Not to mention that was 14 years ago and involved 2 adults! This is our first overseas trip with out 3 children.
Wishful thinking? A little Freudian slip “...with out 3 children.”
