Travel from Bayonne to Sarlat

We will be driving from Bayonne to Sarlat in late September and would appreciate any suggestions for sites to stop at and a restaurant for lunch along the way. Thanks.

Taking the E70, you can stop in Bordeaux or in Libourne, which is on the Dordogne River about midway to Sarlat. Libourne has a covered food market six days a week from 6am-1pm in addition to its thrice-weekly Farmer’s Market.

Do you mean Sarlat-la-Canéda? If so, I recommend a slight detour through Tocane-Saint-Apre, which hosted this year's Filibree. The festival happened in July, but the town will have been decorated with artificial flowers, which are generally left up all year. I have not been this year, but when I was in the Périgord and Dordogne region in late September 2018, I happened to drive through the host town (Saint-Cyprién) and enjoyed seeing the decorations. We stopped for lunch there. It was lovely.

There are a few ways to drive from Bayonne to Sarlat--toll roads or country roads or a mix of the 2. I love the option given for Libourne if you are planning to take toll roads up to Bordeaux then over. Libourne is a quirky town but really great to visit. It's right on the beginning of the Dordogne river. I'd suggest parking in one of the lots by the river (we always are able to find parking there) and it's lovely to stretch the legs walking along the quai and the river. Another option if you are just stopping for lunch and a bit of a leg stretch is Branne, also along the Dordogne. There's a great restaurant there called Café Cuisine. Delicious but you would need to make a reservation as it's busy with locals during lunch time. On your drive, just past St. Émilion (another beautiful place you could stop) is Château et Tour de Montaigne. This is a still owner-occupied château that has been used in a number of films. I believe the tours in English are given through end of September (but double check their website if this is of interest to you.) Further down the Dordogne, and closer to Sarlat, you will find so many more amazing towns, many of which you could visit when during your Sarlat stay. It's a great area and a beautiful drive once you are off the toll road. Enjoy your trip!
