Travel documents for France

We are flying into Paris 2 days before our Switzerland tour. After 1 day in Paris, we will take a train from Paris to Lucerne to meet the tour group. I read we have to show proof documentation of planned departure from France, when we arrive at the airport. Do I have to show pre purchased train ticket? Or will return airline tickets from Switzerland to the US suffice? Thanks for advice!

It's not so much your departure from France but your departure from Schengen.

I go to France a couple of times a year and sometimes fly home from Switzerland or Amsterdam or Berlin or Florence or Ireland -- have never yet been asked to show any documentation on arrival and going through immigration. It can happen but it isn't routine. If asked, having a flight home should do the trick.

You do have to leave before 90 days and they do enforce that, but it is sort of automatic with your passport at exit or your round trip ticket. Make sure you passport is stamped when entering Schengen -- we ran afoul of that once after entering at Rome where the agents are lazy about stamping passports and sometimes just waive people through.

I have never been asked upon arriving in France for any documentation proving that I will leave the Schengen Zone but I travel with a US passport. I have relatives, some of whom are green card holders in the US, who travel with passports from other countries and everyone of them have been asked for proof of their exit from France. I mention this here in case you are not US citizens (passport holders).

We flew into CDG in Paris in April and flew out of Amsterdam. Nobody asked for anything other than our US passport.

I've also never been asked in Paris, Amsterdam or London. I suspect they have that in the rules to make it plain that they can ask. I am making a huge guess here but also suspect there is some profiling going on by the Border Control Agents and you will not fit the profile to have further questioning. Even arriving sleep deprived and maybe not looking your best, lol.

Move this way down on your list of worries!
