Travel choices from London to Provence

Would like to get the forum's advice. I have flights booked into London in May and I need to get down to Avignon to start our Provence trip. (Flights were booked with miles so only London was available). Flight lands at heathrow in the afternoon...so choices are stay overnight at the airport and fly directly to Marseille in the morning (no late flights that same day)....
Or we could take the tube into London and have an evening/night there and do the trip by train the next day. London to Paris / Paris to Avignon.

Could also break up the trip even more and stay a couple of nights in Paris on our way down to Provence but the total trip is only 12 days. We're experienced travelers but I'm a little stumped on what to do! Any advice welcome. Thanks!

Leaving aside the question of why you are flying into London instead of Marseiile..., it seems to me that a 2 hour non stop flight beats a long train ride with a train change AND a station change. And since your time is so limited, the sooner you get where you want to be, the better. But when checking flights, double check what airport they are leaving from and landing at. For instance, Ryan Air flies out of Stanstead and lands in Marseille. EasyJet flies out of Gatwick. Basically, stay near the airport you will fly out of

Thank you CJean for clearing my mind! Yes, we should not stop in Paris and instead get to the south of France ASAP. It's easy to get distracted. Thanks for the tip about watching out for departure airports.
