Wanting to stay in France but not sure best route

Going thru Italy roughly takes about 5 hours.
If you want to stay in France, you can go thru albertville, grenoble, sisteron, fréjus.
Lovely road to say the least but will be closer to 7 hours.
Grenoble and surroundings are a must as far as visiting, so is Sisteron with a nice castle on top of the hill. Moustiers ste-Marie south east of sisteron is one of the prettiest village in France, and 5 minutes away from spectacular Gorges du verdon.

Will you have a car, or are you using trains/buses?

I would choose the Digne-Sisteron-Grenoble route over the major highways. www.viamichelin.com can help with both driving and sightseeing plans.

Thank you for the suggestions. We took the Albertville, Grenoble, Digne, Sisteron route and found it extraordinary and beautiful. It was switchback heaven - or as we called it - 2nd Gear route! Yes it was longer than the Autoroute but so much less traffic until close to the city.

I looked at the same question for my September trip. The quickest driving route is through Turin, Italy. I also wanted to stay in France so adjusted my itinerary from what was originally a loop to a C shape. I'll be coming from Lyon and stopping briefly in Annecy en route. My planned route is now Chamonix to Grenoble, Grenoble to Gorges de la Bourne, and from there to Valence. Normally I'd stop for a night around there, just to break up the trip, but I couldn't find an acceptable place so I'm continuing a little further than I'd like for one day, to an Airbnb near Balazuc. The next day I'll drive to Pont d'Arc, the Chauvet cave, and the Ardeche. Depending on the time. I may see Uzes and Pont du Gard before Arles. I'm staying in Arles a few nights to see the area, then seeing some places in the Luberon and maybe the hills above the Riviera before turning in my car. I'm staying in Juan les Pins for four nights to see the Riviera, then flying out of Nice back to Paris for the last few nights of my trip.
