Travel Amboise to Sarlat

We are looking at traveling from Amboise to Sarlat. By car it approximately 4 1/2 hours and train 7 hours. We are still deciding whether we drive or train. Where is a good half way point to stop at an interesting village please . We could drive it by car and if so love to see some interesting sites on the way. Travelling late April early May. Any suggestions would be great too. Thanks

Oradour-sur-Glane is probably one of the most-frequently mentioned sites to visit between Amboise and Sarlat-la -Caneda. Oradour-sur-Glane was a French village of several hundred residents when Nazi SS soldiers massacred the villagers on June 10, 1944– just days following D-Day— for reasons not fully understood. Charles DeGaulle ordered the site to be preserved just as it was left, in remembrance of the atrocity. Today, the word “Remember” is posted on a sign in the village. Oradour-sur-Glane is located near the city of Limoges.

bev,
Be aware that the suggested driving times on websites usually underestimate driving time by 1-3 hours, depending on distance. They don't factor in stops for bathrooms, meals or gas, so allow some extra time. Also, if you choose non-autoroute drives it could take longer as the D roads can be slower.
Bonne chance!

When planning travel times, it's always best to specify the date of the trip.

There are days of heavy traffic due to people leaving or returning from vacation (weekends in July and August).
Last weekend, a vacation departure day resulted in approximately 1,000 km of traffic jams (cumulative) on French roads.

The Amboise - Sarlat route can be done largely by taking the A20 motorway, which is in summer a major traffic route from Paris, Northern France / Europ to the South of France and Spain .

Bison Futé, the government website, publishes the traffic forecast calendar.

https://www.bison-fute.gouv.fr/previsions,10741.html

The areas on the map are represented from green to black.

Green: Normal traffic
Orange: Difficult traffic
Red: Very difficult traffic
Black: Extremely difficult traffic

bev,
If late April coincides with the pre or post Easter school breaks, the road traffic may be heavier.
