What is the best way to travel from Saint Malo to Bayeaux if one does not plan to rent a car in France. The train seems awfully long for the length of the journey. We plan to go from Saint Malo to Bayeaux the afternoon of Monday, September 9, 2019.
Sadly you have to bite the bullet and take the train. There are buses to Caen, but they are sparse, barely faster, and you still need to take the train from Caen to Bayeux.
Oh my goodness!
Hello from Wisconsin,
the web site dbahn is a good place to go to find departure times and length of travel time between two places. My goodness, 4hr 50 minutes on up. I looked it up. Yikes.
Check bus possibilities. Dbahn show you going to Rennes and bus to Caen and then train to Bayeux. At least with one offering.

It is difficult with public transport (you may have have a look at the train schedule between St Malo and Dol de Bretagne, and then from Dol to Bayeux).
You may also consider a VTC driver (Uber or other apps, or independent VTC drivers...)
Adding to the above, you might save a fair amount of time if you take a cab or other Uber-like vehicle from St Malo to Dol-de-Bretagne station. That way you can hop on a train from Dol to Caen without waiting 1hr+ in Dol (the connections are atrocious, which is why the journey times you saw are terrible). The distance is reasonable, so the price should remain comfortably within double digits.
However, thinking about what the price of a cab or other private hire vehicle from St Malo to Bayeux is likely to be makes me shudder.
