I will be traveling without a car and will be staying in St-Rémy but also want to visit Uzes and Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie. Is it easy to get a taxi coming and going or is using a bus a better alternative. I found a driver for a full day at $600 E but that seemed steep.
I assume you mean Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
You won't find a bus from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to Uzès, they are small provincial towns in different regions.
The only cheaper way by public transport would be to go to Avignon train station (you can take bus 707 from Saint-Rémy, a 45-minute journey), then take a TER train to Nîmes (40-minute journey). Once in Nîmes, take bus 152, which stops in Uzès (a 50-minute journey), and then on to Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie.
If you want to save some money, take a taxi to Avignon train station (not the TGV station) to catch a train to Nîmes. Once in Nîmes, if there are no buses available for your schedule, take a taxi to Saint-Rémy.
If you want to save time and money, rent a car, it will cost you 10 times less than a driver and you'll get there 5 times faster than using public transport.
Can you rent a car for the day to do this? There is a bus from Avignon to Uzes so you could take one bus to Avignon connect there but unless you cannot drive, IMO, renting a car for the day is the best option. A driver for a full day at 600€, assuming 8 hours, seems high to me. I would expect something in the 300€ to 400€ range. Have you called or emailed the local taxi companies?
As JoLui suggests, renting a car would be easier and much more viable. Staying overnight in Uzes, Avignon, or Nimes would also make it much easier. Here are some bits of information that might be helpful:
A few weeks ago, I used Nabais Taxi in Uzes, recommended by the Tourist Office in Uzes. The dispatcher spoke English although the driver did not (not a problem). They charged me 13 euros for Uzes to Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie. They have a fare estimator on their website which might help you. I returned to Uzes on bus 152.
LIO Bus 115 goes from Avignon to Uzes 5 or 6 times per day (less often on Sat, Sun, holidays). Takes about 45 min. It also stops at Pont du Gard.
LiO Bus 152 goes from Nimes to Uzes 7-8 times per day, takes about 45 min. and continues on to St Quentin la Poterie (about 10 minutes) several times per day.
Note that bus 115 from Avignon to Uzès only runs on weekdays. It is primarily intended for school transport.
The only option I see is to take the 6:40 am bus, which allows you to catch bus 152 at 8:28 am in Uzès to Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie (weekdays only).
With the bus 152 there are 3 return possibilities from Uzès to Avignon: 5:22 pm, 6:21 pm, and 7:33 pm
That's why you should definitely consider renting a car if you don't want to spend your day waiting for buses or trains and walking to and from bus stops or stations.
Ordinarily,, I would defer to JoLui who clearly knows France much, much better than I do, but I definitely took the 115 bus on a Sunday last month between Uzes and Pont-du-Gard and I know it came from and went on to Avignon on that Saturday and Sunday. I still happen to have the printed schedule. However, there are fewer buses on weekends.
