We are arranging our own transport for our Viking cruise starting in Avignon so must get ourselves to the boat in Avignon. We fly into Marseille at 8 p.m. Should we spend the night there or in Avignon? Trains, bus or taxi? We need to be at the boat by 3 p.m.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

To get from the Marseille airport to Avignon, you need to take a bus from the airport to the train station, and then the train to Avignon. It's fairly convenient. A cab ride would probably be fairly expensive.
If you are up for a late night (you probably wouldn't get to Avignon before 10 p.m.), I would personally rather stay the night in Avignon and have several hours there the next day to site see before your cruise departs.
Here is info on the bus and train from the airport. http://www.marseille-airport.com/access-car-parks/access/trains. The train station in the Marseille airport is only a few minutes from the airport itself. When you go to Avignon, you want to go to Avignon centre, not the Avignon TGV.
