(1) RER "B" train to Gare du Nord, transfer by tunnel to Magenta station, then RER "E" to Gare St-Lazare, OR (2) Taxi from CDG to Gare St-Lazare. The taxi will cost 50 euros. With three or four people, this will be comparable to the RER fare and much more convenient, plus you'll see some of the Paris streets (as well as big highways) on the way. The RER is probably faster, especially during rush hour.

Be careful about pickpockets especially on the RER and transferring.

Its $55 euros now for a taxi (flat rate no tip) as of May 2018- just be sure to go outside to the “Official Taxi Line” where a attendant will call the next taxi in line- there are many people in airport who will come up to you asking if you need a taxi just say no and keep moving. I also took the RER train very fast and convenient as well/ I had no pickpocket trouble just keep your purse and valuables close and it will be fine.

If it is four people, a taxi makes good sense. If it is less, I always take the RoissyBus. It leaves right outside of the arrivals area at CDG, brings you right next to Opéra Garnier (7 minute walk to Gare-Saint-Lazare), and costs €12,50/pp. Either taxi or bus are direct (i.e., no changes), don't require stairs, and let you actually see the city on arrival rather than tunneling underground. It makes no sense to me to take the RER/Metro to this part of the city, unless your only priority is getting there as fast as you possibly can during rush hour. And then that only works if you know exactly the route, platforms, etc. and don't have to stop at each change to makes sure you are going the right way.

My too sense...

We followed the RS guidebook recommendation and booked a car service with Paris Webservices. They will wait for you if your flight is delayed. The car was nice and new and clean, the driver spoke good English -- he had done a year of university in the USA -- and made sure we were at the right hotel and everything when he dropped us off. You get a discount if you show your RS guidebook.
