I am booked on a Viking cruise of the Seine beginning Dec. 17. But they have nothing for us to do on the 17th, and the ship is docked in le Pecq, a long way from Paris. Is it possible to take a train to a Metro station so we don't waste a day? We would like to visit the Fondation Louis Vuitton.
Le Pecq is right alongside the RER A line, Le Vesinet-Le Pecq station isn't too far and trains take you to Paris in less than 30 minutes. For the Fondation LV, get off at Etoile and take the shuttle bus (that way you also get to see the Arc de Triomphe) EDIT actually the shuttle is a bad call, see below.
If you're feeling less ambitious, Saint Germain en Laye is just up the hill from Le Pecq and is a very pleasant small town, with a handful of museums.
The Louis Vuitton shuttle bus from Etoile is only available if you have pre-booked a ticket for the gallery online.
When we went there were about 50 people trying to get on the pre purchased shuttle that holds about 6 seated and maybe 12 max crammed in standing. you have to wait for it to complete its round trip to get the next one. You can take the #1 metro from Etoille to Sablon and walk over to the Fondation.
Much less hassle-free (and faster!) to walk, as Janet says.
Ok, was unaware of the new rule about the shuttle! In that case it's even better and faster to get off the RER A at la Défense (only buying a ticket from Le Pecq to La Défense) and take line 1 there to Les Sablons. A bit cheaper too.
