Transport from Gare du Nord to Westin Vendome

Do you think it best to take a cab from the train station to our hotel or try the Metro? I had planned on using the Metro, but it sounds like there are changes involved and we are not sure what to do. I DO know not to get a cab from right in the train station, as scalpers charged my aunt $100 Euros for this trip last year. If we decide to get a cab, where could we get one that would be reasonably priced?

Thanks!
Shirley

Just follow the "taxi" signs in the station and they will lead you to the taxi rank outside the station. Lucky you to be staying at such a posh and expensive hotel.

A well dressed man asked us if we needed a taxi just before we entered the line for a taxi this past June. It was a good thing that I asked "how much" and was quoted 65 euro which made me realize that the man was not offering me the regular metered taxi.

The metered taxi ride ended up being 25 euro during pretty heavy traffic.

The Metro will be fine as long as you don't have huge quantities of luggage. Take Line 4 to Chatelet and then Line 1 to Tuileries. Chatelet has a reputation for long and complex interchanges, but 4 to 1 isn't bad - just follow the signs for Line 1 - La Defense.

If you are arriving by Eurostar, they sell Metro carnet ticket packs in the departure lounge at St Pancras, which may be easier than queuing up with everyone else on the train at Gare du Nord.

At about $400 per night at the Westin, I think your budget can accommodate this relatively short 20 min taxi ride.

I'd take a taxi with luggage, use Metro and buses later for sightseeing without luggage. The taxis are on the right-hand side of the station as you exit the platforms. Go outside and let the dispatcher put you in one, you'll be fine.

Here's all you want to know, and more, about trains, stations, and Metro.

I'm smiling about the comments regarding the cost of staying at the Westin... we re staying there totally free due to Starwood Points and are on a very slim budget. :-) Our time in Paris is limited, though, so maybe the time saved would be worth taking a cab. Is tipping expected in Paris taxis?
Thanks!

1 or 2 euro, perhaps five if the driver is particularly helpful with luggage.

(No offence was intended by referring to the normal price at The Westin. It is, of course, pure jealousy and a gentle ribbing of your indulgence. We all enjoy a little luxury from time to time, whether it's points or pay.)

No offense taken! So thankful we can stay at such a lovely place on points! Thanks for all the help with the transportation! Has anyone tried Uber in Paris?
