Translation tools

Traveling to Paris May 14 for 6 nights.
What translation tools have proven easy to use and effective?

Mainly translating written word, menus, signage, etc., as well as converting US to french language for short verbal communications.
Know of Google translate, but are there better ones?
Will be studying to memorize the basics.
Thanks much.

Practicality-wise you're not going to have time to pull out your phone for everything. It's a western country - you'll be surprised how easy it is.

The Google Translate app is amazing if you are translating written words like museum signage or menus. You click on the camera option and point your phone at whatever you are wanting to read and it translates the entire sign/plaque/menu etc. for you. Pretty cool.

Google translate works well enough that it really does not make sense to download or invest in another app. You probably will not use it for conversing, but it is handy to look up a word or to use the camera function to translate text. Most people you encounter will speak enough English that you can get by in any encounter, using the speaking functions of Google Translate is awkward for most conversation, maybe OK in a case of urgent need.
