Transiting while in Europe

Expect this will change prior to our trip late May - 3 weeks. We fly into Paris (CDG) from Vancouver 🇨🇦 where we will overnight because we cannot get a decent connection to Genoa that day. So we expect to have to meet the COVID rules for France 🇫🇷. The following day we will fly to Genoa Italy 🇮🇹 where will will train to Rapallo for 8 nights. Unfortunately there are no direct flights to Genoa and we will go via Amsterdam (40 minute layover). My question is: On the Paris-Genoa leg of our trip do we have to meet COVID rules for both Netherlands and Italy, since we will not be leaving the airport only going from one gate to another? Has anybody had this situation? Also, we will move our roadshow to Villefranche sur La Mer, France via train before getting a car and heading to Provence (Menerbre). Has anyone transited Italy - France via train? Do you do COVID entry at our destination or at the border? Finally any Canadians who visited lately. What did you use for proof of vaccine? Federal or provincial QR codes on phone, printed or photo. Any difficulties? Hope this makes sense. Thanks!

This may not answer your original question regarding testing, but there are flights from Vancouver to Genoa that only make one stop in either Frankfurt or Amsterdam. As much as I love Paris, you don't have to stop there to only have to make another two-hop flight the next day to get to Genoa. www.rome2rio.com is a big help in finding alternate routes.

Thanks for the information Phil. Unfortunately we had credit from Air France cancellation from early pandemic. They don’t do that route as far as I can find.

You will need the following to enter France from Canada:

  1. A negative PCR/Antigen test taken no earlier than 48 hours before your initial embarkation.
  2. To complete a sworn statement about covid contact.
  3. You must have the Covid booster if your 2nd shot was received earlier than 9 months before entry into France.

Once in France, you will need a pass vaccinal to enter cafés, restaurants, museums, concerts, or use non-local transportation, i.e. TGVs, Intercité trains, or flights.

  1. Covid booster taken 3 months after the 2nd shot with a 1-month grace period (4 months total from 2nd shot).
  2. Pass is valid 7 days after the booster.
  3. Your Covid shot record may be evaluated by almost any pharmacist who can issue EU QR codes making your information universally acceptable. Cost is 36€.

I cannot answer for what might be required outside of France but generally, the French shot documentation (QR codes/pass vaccinale) should be usable throughout the EU.

Not an answer to your question, but that sounds like a very cumbersome route. Have you considered flying to Milan, Pisa or Florence instead and then taking the train? That sounds like a much easier route than the detour via Amsterdam.

Or KLM to Amsterdam to Genoa--Air France and KLM are codeshare if not the same airline.

Or AF to Nice and take the train.

Appreciate all the alternate flight suggestions but we looked at a variety of options and chose to fly into Paris and stay over night before pressing onwards. Both of us have travelled to Europe previously and do not want to have 15-16 + hours of travel to Genoa where will be taking a train to our destination Rapallo. Just too darn long a day for us!! Our question was to do with COVID procedures and your recent personal experiences.
