trains to Lyon

I am planning my own extension after my organized trip. My organized trip ends in Avignon and I want to go to Lyon for a few nights and then on to Paris for a flight home. I know there are 2 train stations in Lyon and wonder if one would be more convenient than another. As we walk everywhere and both stations seem near old Lyon do the stations service different types of trains. Having once book a train to a wrong station, i am a very careful and check myself!

This largely depends on the location of your hotel . I spent a week in Lyon this past Autumn , so for me, Part Dieu was a better choice .Once you have chosen your hotel go to Bahn de ( German Raiways ) and put your information into a search . Your options will then be displayed

There are more than 2 stations in Lyon. Perrache and Part Dieu in the city, and Saint Exupéry outside the city. Perrache is closer to the parts that usually attracts tourists, Part Dieu is a bit closer to the financial district. But I'm not sure if there are any trains from the south to Perrache. In any case there are both metro and trams at Part Dieu that can take you where you want to go.

If you want to take a TGV high speed train, they go between Avignon TGV to Gare Part Dieu. You don't want to go to Lyon St Exupery since it is at the airport well outside of town. There is a 5 minute connector train between Avignon Center and Avignon TGV. There are some unreserved TER trains from Avignon Center to Lyon Part Dieu that take about 1 hour longer than the TGV.

And since Avignon to Lyon Part-Dieu and Lyon Part-Dieu to Paris are TGV routes, as soon as you nail down your itinerary dates, you can buy the heavily-discounted TGV tickets at www.SNCF-Connect.com. They’re the ones that are listed as “Prem’s” tickets and can be as little as €11 when they first go on sale 90 days before the date of travel.
Have a great Trip!
