Hi Guys, third trip to France and Europe. But this time we are going to use trains. What do travellers think of using the fast train from Paris to Lyon and then a train to Annecy? We are planning to go mid March, value input, and if we should book ahead, and whether 1st or 2nd class?
Sounds like a good plan.
Nowadays train travel in Europe works similarly to air travel. So yes reserve now and you will get an assigned seat. Trains can sell out on popular TGV routes and just like air travel you save money by reserving in advance.
For me 2nd class is just fine. If you find all 2nd class seats are gone, you might have to get a 1st class ticket
We went TGV straight from Paris to Annecy last fall and then Ouigo from Annecy to Lyon ad TGV to Paris from there on the way back. Do not book Ouigo on these long trips -- very miserable seating. TGV second class is fine (more comfortable than airplane coach). Sometimes first class is not much more in which case we get it -- seats a little roomier and more comfortable, but the difference is slight enough that we don't bother if it is a significant cost.
If you do not stop in Lyon, definitely take the direct trains to Annecy: there are several trains each day.
Changing trains in Lyon is unpleasant (Part-Dieu station is undergoing works and is very crowded at all times).
I would pay no more than 25% extra for 1st class, personally. You should book ahead, and you should do so asap if your dates are firm, while keeping an eye on the strikes announced after 7 March.
