Looking at the website of the Deutsche Bahn you have excellent connections with only one change of trains. Advance-bought tickets can be as cheap as EUR 49,90. There is no need for first class: second class is comfortable enough for most people.
Use the »Further options« function to adjust the connection time. Using the standard setting, the planner gives a connection between trains of only 14 minutes, which is a little bit short at an unknown station. A connection time of 30 mins is better for your peace of mind. Using that setting, it gives a connection in Mannheim of around 1 hr. Perfect for a lunch, a coffee or whatever is on offer.
