I have traveled by train with my family in the past from Paris to Lucerne. However, I just can't remember the best website to go on to get all the information about the best prices and best routes to take, as well as all other routes through Europe. I will be traveling on a budget with my 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren (ages 8, 12 & 12). Any information you can give me, as any tips on saving money would be greatly appreciated. We will be traveling from June 23rd through July 16. Thanks so much.
I get prices and routes at www.sncf-connect.com. The best tip I know of for saving money is to buy your tickets early -- tickets typically go on sale 90 days before travel date and the less expensive tickets can sell out. Typically, you lose some flexibility with the less expensive tickets in that there are cancellation or change fees. If you are looking for train travel information, maybe take a look at https://www.seat61.com/.
If you want the fastest, most direct route, then go to the Swiss rail site: https://www.sbb.ch/en
Most tickets are bookable 6 months in advance. Or SNCF (French) bookable 3 months out
If you want to look at trains running just about anywhere in Europe, you can check the Deutche Bahn website: https://int.bahn.de/en
but it's generally best to book tickets through the website of the rail company in the country you are either starting or ending in.
Another website, which has a wealth of info on trains in Europe is the Man in Seat 61: https://www.seat61.com/
but it's generally best to book tickets through the website of the rail company in the country you are either starting or ending in.
If two rail lines are involved, check prices on both. Prices for the same train and class of service can vary widely.
if you plan on several trains, boats, mountain transport etc., you might save money with a Half Fare card, and then a free Family card for kiddoes travel, or you may consider other Swiss transport products.
If you have either a Half Price Card or Swiss Travel Pass or some other products you can save on the Swiss portion of your Paris - Luzern journey.
