Planning to travel October 8, this year (2025) from either Marseille or Nice to Genoa, but various sources give different answers as to whether there is or is not daily DIRECT trains from either of the above to Genoa! Does anybody have clarification please?
Thanks, Neil
I believe you will have to change trains at the Ventimiglia at the Italian border no matter what.
You take a local train in France to the border, Vintimille, where you take an Italian train to Genoa.
If starting from Marseille, you take a train from Marseille to Nice, where you change to the commuter train to the border, where you change to the Italian train to Genoa.
From Nice to Genoa you do have to change trains in Ventimiglia which is a dinky little town on the Italian-French border. At least that's how I've done it a few times, and if there is any direct train from France to Genoa I'm not aware of it.
There are normally no direct trains. There used to be in the past, and Trenitalia is running a direct Nice - Milano on some days this summer, but in general you always change trains in Ventimiglia.
Now changing trains is a normal and expected feature of train travel. Don't fret over it. Because SNCF currently does not sell tickets for places you cannot reach from Paris you are best of buying this ticket on Trainline.
