train Lyon to CGD (tram from Quai Claude Bernard to Gare Perrache in Lyon)

Bonjour mes amis!

I searched for a discussion, but didn't find anything specific, so I'm posting.

After our Rick Steves Loire & Provence tour from Chartres to Nice, we are taking a Viking cruise from Avignon to Lyon.

My question is about the final leg from Lyon to CGD airport.

Although Viking doesn't provide the information, I'm pretty sure we disembark on Sunday July 12 at Quai Claude Bernard in Lyon.
Then we need to get to the train station to catch the train to CGD airport. We would like to leave Lyon in the morning (Sunday July 12)

There are 2 train stations close to the cruise dock:
Lyon-Perrache
Lyon Part-Dieu

Perrache seems to be the closest train station. Is that the best choice? Better train connections from Part-Dieu?

This map:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/dTwZR4dxssRoTRVg6

shows the route from the dock at Quai Claude Bernard to Lyon-Perrache train station. It seems straightforward, but we have
no idea how to find out when the tram runs. Google maps only gives options like (leave now, depart at, leave by, last available).
How do I see all of the departure times? I visited the tcl.fr Web site, and found maps (https://tcl.fr/en/journey-planner/interactive-map), but they don't seem to have information for July 12. Calendar Web app seems very odd - 12th is greyed out, and when I click something else (3,4,5), it jumps back to April. Also no information about how often the tram runs. I need this so I know when I can book the train from Lyon-Perrache to CGD airport.

I can't find a list of all of the Lyon-CGD trains for July 12 - every time I think I've found it, I have to enter a time. I just want to see them all and then make a choice. Since July 12 is Sunday, there may not be as many trains?

Merci!

You have to enter a time for the train from Lyon to CDG airport. But then the website / app will show you all the available trains starting at your requested time, and have buttons available for "earlier trains" above and "later trains" below. So it's a little clunky, but you can see everything you want to see.

Lyon Part Dieu is the mainline station for Lyon. You can see the trains for July 2 at https://int.bahn.de/en

You will see that there are direct trains from Lyon Part Dieu to CDG at 8:37, 11:00, 14:00, 16:00, 17:00, 19:01, 20:27.

I would just plan on taking a taxi from the Viking dock to Lyon Part Dieu.

I am on the Viking cruise from Lyon to Avignon. On Sunday we took the train from Gare de Lyon to Lyon Part Dieu. The taxi to Claude Bernard quai cost about 20€.

Be sure to type in CDG, not CGD. Just remember Charles de Gaulle.

Are you trying to make a flight out on July 12 as well? I hope it isn't until the next day.

I don't think there are any trains from Perrache to CDG, so you have to make your way to Part Dieu.

Thanks for all of the pointers

  1. ok - I will enter a time and look for earlier/later trains
  2. ok - I will use Part-Dieu station, not Perrache
  3. yes - I know it's CdG (CGD was typo)
  4. ok - I will use Part-Dieu station, not Perrache

Trying to sort out getting to Part-Dieu now. There are 2 sides - east side (Villette) vs west side (Merle). Are they both main entrances?

Google says I can take T1 from the Quai to the Merle side of Part-Dieu (purple line on this map - https://maps.app.goo.gl/PceDEz6K7gn4GMeD7)
Does that look right?

Disembarkation will be early morning, so I'll just book a train for somewhere in the 10:00 - 11:00 time and assume that the trams run often enough that I will have lots of time to get there.

Merci

Booking the train from Lyon Part-Dieu to CdG

I went to https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/ and entered:

Departure: Lyon Part-Dieu (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes)

Arrival: Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport (TGV station - CDG 2)

Departure: Sun July 12, 10:00

It shows only 6 trains, none of which are good for me ( I'd like something between 10:00 - 14:00)

18:49 - 22:02,
19:01 - 21:01,
20:27 - 22:31,
05:50 - 08:01,
06:26 - 09:50,
08:27 - 10:32

Above the list, it says "Urban transport timetables may not be available more than 30 days in advance." So there must be more trains, but it can't show them - I'm too far ahead? Is it because it's a Sunday?

I tried different dates Sun May 24, Sun April 26 - same result - only 6 trains. But when I tried Sun Mar 29, I got lots of trains (I kept clicking "see more trains" at the bottom).

So how am I supposed to book the train for July 12?

I could go to another site, but I read somewhere that SNCF is the preferred place to book trains for travel entirely within France.

Hmm, when I look, I get a TGV at 11:00 am, arrive CDG at 1:02 pm. TGV INOUI no. 9862
The SNCF site alters the times according to where you are located. I just put in 4 am in the time box, and I get results beginning at 9 am in France. If the time is too late, I just click on "Display previous journeys" at the top of the page.

And the main entrance is the west side of the station.

But what day did you enter? If it's "today" or "now", there are lots of trains. But if you try July 12, there are only 6.

Are we looking at the same thing? Here's a screen grab of what I see: https://jagbev.ca/_temp/sncf.jpg (red box is mine)

Well on 12 July I can see an 11am direct, arrive CDG at 1.02 and an 1134 direct, arrive 1.32pm.
Fares on the former from 118 Euro, on the latter 35 Euro

The 11:34 am goes from Lyon airport, not Part Dieu.

Ah-ha! Mystery solved.

I only wanted to see what trains were available, so I could see all of my options, regardless of price.

So after entering the date/time & start/end points, I clicked "view only the timetable" (under the big blue "see prices" button). When you do that, you only see some of the trains and there are no links for "display previous journeys" and "display the next journeys".

When you click "See prices", you see everything, including the all-important links for next/previous journeys.

So now I'm on the same page as the rest of you! :)

Sam - you said "The SNCF site alters the times according to where you are located". Are you sure about that? Why would they do that? Paris is UTC+1 and I'm in Arizona at UTC-7, so that's an 8 hour time difference. If I asked for a train at 14:00 (Paris time), why would they show me trains at my local time of 06:00 (Arizona time)? Or have I misunderstood?

It is the other way around. If you ask for a train at 14:00 (Paris time), it will show trains starting at 21:00. Its a software thing, that is all I can say. If I put in that I want a train at 11:00 am, it shows the first train at 5 pm. I always choose 4 am when looking at train times, then if it is still too late, I click on Display previous journeys.
