I am planning to do a day trip to Amboise from Tours. Is it necessary to purchase the round trip train tickets in advance or can I just purchase the tickets when I get to the train station?

It's very easy to use the SNCF app and purchase tickets just before boarding the train. I did this multiple times last fall when staying in the area. No need to guess at the return train time. As the plans become clear, buy the ticket and head to the station. The local trains are the same price. (sometimes there is a special sale but that is an exception)
