Train from Paris to Munich - Help!

We want to take a train from Paris to Munich on May 31. It is our understanding that we can take a high speed train and that we can reserve specific seats.

When can we book? - as far as we can tell, 90 days in advance is the earliest that we can book? Is that true?

Best website to book? - What is the best website to buy our tickets (that will let us reserve our seats)? We've been looking at Voyages-sncf, BAHN, Captain Train & Loco2. On the voyages-sncf site it says you can't book specific seats.

Train Route Availability - since I don't think we can book for May 31 this early, I'm guessing we won't be able to know prices yet. What concerns me is that we noticed that for the dates you CAN book right now, that the Paris to Munich train runs on some Tuesdays but not others. Is there anyway of knowing NOW if there will be a train running from Paris to Munch on Tue, May 31?

I don't know why this train stuff is confusing us so much but we really need your help!

Some TGV trains are for sale now for travel through the summer, including this one. However, they are not showing any discounts available, as they are for March. Look again in a few weeks to see if those are added. I would book it through DB for the best mix of booking direct and ease of use (versus SNCF site). Tickets include a reserved seat assignment, just like a plane ticket, and are not changeable or refundable at the cheaper rates. Don't count on selecting your seats; you will automatically be seated together if space allows.

Thanks for your reply Laura! I don't think I understand. A couple questions:
1. You said tickets include a reserved seat but I can't select a seat? So are reserving and selecting seats two different thing? And are you saying that there's a possibility that I could be on a 9 hours train ride and not be sitting with my husband? Even if we book well in advance?
2. You mention that the site is not showing any discounted rates right now. Is that what "Flexpreis" means on the site? Are those discounted rates and that's why it says "Fares not available"? Where can we see the regular prices? I don't even see those.

As you've probably seen from the schedules, one of the shortest trips on that route will be a departure from Paris Est at 10:54, arriving Munich at 16:27 (time 5H:33M, 1 change in Stuttgart). Be sure to allow adequate time to get from wherever your hotel is located to Paris Est via Metro or Taxi. Note that the first segment has compulsory reservations, while these appear to be optional on the second segment (probably a good idea to get reserved seats on that one too).

The bahn.de website indicates that "Tickets for this train will be bookable from February 2016. The schedule will be revised." I'd suggest checking the website on a regular basis to determine when the tickets will be available. I'd probably buy the tickets from Captain Train, but buying from DB Bahn is also good.

"Is there anyway of knowing NOW if there will be a train running from Paris to Munch on Tue, May 31?" - Yes, times change every December, and sometimes in July. So the times are fixed up until the second Sunday in December 2016, and have been fixed since last December.
Just go to www.bahn.de and look up the times. You won't be able to book more than 90 days in advance, but you can look up the times.

Thanks Ken! I clearly must not be looking at the correct ANYTHING! A couple days ago we were looking at a non-stop departing Paris at 15:25 on May 31 and arriving in Munich at 21:36 (a 6 hour trip). And so we CAN reserve seats? I wasn't sure by what Laura was telling me in her reply. I seriously don't know why I can't understand any of this.

Which website are you using to research the train schedules? As the others have mentioned, the absolute best website to research train schedules all over Europe is the Bahn.de (German Rail) website. That's what I checked to obtain the information I posted in my earlier reply.

Not to worry! This is not actually difficult at all, and I'm sure you'll get it sorted.

I think the train you are looking at is at 15:55. It is more correctly a DIRECT train, no changes required. It does make stops along the way at Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Ulm, and Augsburg.
Since it is a TGV, look at the French website: http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/?DISTRIBUTED_COUNTRY=GB
Right now, TGV is not showing schedules beyond May 1 for this route. stay tuned.

Yes, I also would choose that afternoon direct train, with no connections. You can test a booking now to see whether or not a choice of seats is offered to you. But if not, then seats will be assigned by the computer. Booking this far ahead there's no reason to worry about not getting seated together; it's standard practice.
