We are meeting a private guide at the Carentan station on July 15th. Do I need to book train tickets in advance? Which line and departure station in Paris is best?

It's Gare St Lazare in Paris. You do not HAVE to book rail tickets in advance, but you will probably get a discount if you book ASAP at www.capitainetrain.com. Note that these cheap advance tickets are strictly linked to a specific train, so if you are flying into Paris and planning to get the train to Carentan on the same day, it may be better to buy tickets on the day in case your flight is delayed.
