Train from Paris to Caen

We will be spending a week in Paris and then taking a train to Caen where we will pick up a rental car.

Do we need to book our train tickets to Caen in advance? Or can we go to the train station that morning and buy our tickets? We are travelling mid May. Thank you.

It is cheaper in advance, you can book now if you want!
Be careful; trains are currently scarce at weekends due to engineering works.

Only slightly cheaper in advance. But if you know for sure when you are going, why not? Otherwise, there are always tickets available, and you can just walk up.

The fare structure for the Normandy trains recently changed, so it is now almost 3x cheaper in advance. 43.50€ if you want a ticket for today (which I find shockingly expensive for that 150 mile journey), vs 16€ if you want it in two months.

We purchased the day of our travel. Have you checked the day/operating times of the car rental company in Caen?

This is a very good point. Some of the rental offices close for a 2-hour lunch at noon, and there used to be a train from Paris that arrived right after noon. Also, Sunday hours can be very limited, if any at all.
