Train from Paris to Amboise

Do we (party of 4) need a train reservation form Paris to Amboise (Mon.)Oct. 24 or should we just buy tickets at the Paris station?

You are still 2 weeks away from being able to book this. If you buy in two weeks, looks like the total for 4 would 64.40 EUR for non exchangeable tickets. If you wait to buy at the station it will cost you 242 EUR. Take your pick. These trains are TGV's from Gare Montparnasses to St Pierre-des-Corps then a short connecting local train to Amboise. TGV's always include seat reservations when you buy them.

There are also IC trains going from Gare d'Austerlitz, less frequently, and a bit slower for 133.60 EUR for 4 and this price is always the same.

InterCity trains depart a few times per day from Paris Austerlitz station, don't require reservations, and are cheaper than TGV trains at full fare. Some are direct to Amboise and some have a connection at Orleans. You can buy tickets in the station or at SNCF boutiques (ticket offices) around the city.

TGV trains depart Paris Montparnasse station, require a connection to reach Amboise, are only sold as reserved tickets, and offer advance-purchase discounts. They may or may not be faster, depending on departure time.

How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it; does not sell these tickets.

I would highly recommend buying the tickets ahead of time, - as soon as they become available which is generally 90 days out. Right now on captaintrain.com, you can buy tickets for Oct. 12, so in a little less than two weeks you'll be able to buy your tickets for the 24th. By buying them ahead of time, you can get the Prems rate which is 20.10 euro, compared to upwards of 68.50 euro if you buy them the day of. These Prems tickets are non-refundable, but as long as you know the date/time you want to head to Amboise, you can save a lot of money!

Thanks everyone. I knew about waiting until 90 days before but wasn't sure about whether to book in advance. Savings are much better if we book in advance instead of waiting to book in Paris.

Jmeek,

We visited Amboise last month & I booked our Intercity (IC) train tickets from Gare d'Austerlitz to Amboise ( direct)
about 90 days in advance of our travel date for €15 pp!

My daughter & I enjoyed our visit to Amboise very much. It was so peaceful & quiet when we were there.
The chateaux in the Loire Valley are magnificent! Our favorite was Chenonceau ;-)

Enjoy your trip!
