Can I get a train from Naumur, in the Loire valley, to Chamonix? Or would renting a car be faster & easier?

From where? There is no place called Naumur.
Anyway, if the place has a railway station you can travel by train to Chamonix. And the answer to how to get from A to B by train in France can usually be found here: www.sncf-connect.com

One issue you will encounter is that SNCF isn't really interested in people travelling to places other than Paris. So if you look up Saumur - Chamonix the only solution you get is a late evening one.
You can however split the ticket. Book Saumur - Paris and Paris - Chamonix.
I would take the 7:49 direct train to Paris Austerlitz. That station is just a short walk to Pars Gare de Lyon, where your trip to Chamonix will start from.
Edit: Or book separately: Saumur - Annecy (there is a solution that bypasses Paris) and Annecy - Chamonix.
