We are leaving our traveling companions with the car in Honfleur to get to CDG for a flight home the next day, but wanted to stop at Giverny to visit the garden and museum on the way. Is it possible or feasible by bus or train?
I am not clear on what is going on here. Are you staying in France for a while and wanting to stop at Giverny on the way to Paris? Can your traveling companions drop you at Rouen or Vernon on their way to the airport. Bus transport to Le Havre is spotty, and that is where the train that will take you to Rouen where you change trains to Vernon. There is no rail service in Honfleur, so using that car to get you some where you have rail access will make things a lot easier.
What is CFC?
Yes, after 3 weeks in France, hoping to visit Giverny on the way back to Paris. Our friends want to stay in Normandy a few more days, but perhaps they could take us to Rouen. If we take the train from there to Giverny, I assume there’s a shuttle to the gardens.
So you are going to the airport to fly home the following day. Then your friends can just take you by car to Le Havre station. Its only about 25 minutes by car over the Seine estuary. There are trains at 7, 8, and 9 that will take you to Vernon for 30 EUR per person and take 1 hour and 47 minutes. Yes, local bus to Giverny. When done you can get a train to Paris St Lazare. Staying in Paris or at the airport? You can take a taxi for 50 EUR to the airport, or travel by bus or RER train to the airport for a less.
Thanks very much. Sounds like a good plan.
Check the schedule for your date of travel. Schedules vary over the summer months due to track work and ever present strikes and threats of strikes.

You will have to find a place to store your luggage. There is no baggage storage at the train station in Vernon.
Note that local bus is not the same as a dedicated shuttle. Have not been there in 30 years, when we rented bikes from the station to Giverny. Luggage will be an issue.
