Is it possible to train from Bayeux to Versailles, tour Versailles, and then continue to Paris in the same day? We are four adults going in April. We were thinking of touring Versailles once in Paris, but to save time we are wondering if this is possible. Thanks for any advice.
The simple answer is "No", it's not possible to go directly from Bayeux to Versailles without going through Paris first, as different rail networks are involved.
You'll first travel from Bayeux to Paris St. Lazare by "regular" rail and then have to transfer to RER for the trip to Versailles (as I recall, the correct stop is Versailles Rive Gauche) - the train will have "Vick" written in the sign above the driver's window). Depending on which part of Paris your hotel is located, you may have to use the Metro to get to one of the stations on the RER "C" line.
It would be easier to do the Versailles trip once you're in Paris.
Actually there is a way, whether it is worth it or not I leave to you.
Bayeux to Caen, change to train to Mantes La Jolie, change to a train to Versailles Chantier. Takes about the same or more time than going into Paris but might save a euro or two. Leave Bayeux at 7:06 and arrive Versailles at 10:45. There is a quicker connection from Mantes La Jolie with the TGV, but I imagine costs a bit more. Saves about 40 minutes.
Versailles Chantier is about a mile walk to the Palace. The RER station from Paris is Versailles Rive Gauche which is a half mile closer.
Thanks, Ken and Sam, for the advice and info. Must give part of our trip some thought. I am thinking we just zip into Paris early and sightsee. Do Versailles another afternoon or morning.
I think that many people would agree with doing it on a different day, kbordelon50.
As always, Nigel is spot-on!
