I purchased our tickets on SNCF from Strasbourg to Paris. It was 82 Euros each, which was $200 on my cc. Was that all because of the exchange rate or could there have been a transaction charge. It seemed high, but that's the cheapest they had.
I was looking to see what it would be from Colmar to Strasbourg and the times, and I know it's too early, but it had a couple there that said 30 euros. That seems like a lot for a 30 minute trip. I'm assuming they only have regional trains for that route. I didn't notice what kind of train that was. Has anyone taken a regional train on that route and how long and how much was it?
We did this same trip in May of 2023. Our train tickets from Strasbourg to Paris were 72 Euros each for 1st class on TGF InOui. We waited to buy the regional train tickets between Colmar and Strasbourg until we were there. It was 39 Euros for 2 people round trip and was a 30 minute trip with one brief stop in Selestat. The train was very crowded. Be ready to get off the train quickly because it does not stop long. The Strasbourg and Colmar area is beautiful. It was well worth it.
We too took the train in late May 2023. It was 39.10€ for two of us. With the exchange rate it was $42.08. Our train didn’t stop anyplace.
SNCF lists the standard price as 30.20 EUR for 2 in 2nd class, 45.40 EUR for 1st class for the TER's (regional trains). Takes anywhere from 33 to 35 minutes.
I think maybe the price I saw was for 2 not just me, from what you all said. That sounds better. If it was quite crowded and we are traveling May 12, the last day of a holiday weekend, how far out should we buy our tickets? One of you said it was RT. Was that a mistake?
It sounds like we paid too much for the train to Paris, as it was 2nd class.
You can't reserve for Colmar-Strasbourg trains, so it does not matter when you buy.
Are you on a Ouigo Train? All the regular TGV's are showing 230 EUR for 2 in 2nd class for May 12, so you did pretty good if you are one of those.
Yes, if you put in two travelers the quoted price will be for two, not one. I chose a random day in May and prices quite honestly were all over the place depending on day of the week, time of day, class of service and type of train.
I can see where you may have paid that much even though it does seem high.
Even there, some prices in 2nd class started at 115€ per ticket.
I’ve had to do quite a bit of playing around on sncf before I could actually understand purchasing tickets.
I’ve spent more time on trenitalia, like a lot of time, and even so, I purchased tickets for the wrong day for our next trip!! I was able to change them but by the time I realized my mistake, one leg of the trip did cost me more. It’s the darn learning curve that seems to get longer and longer every year-sometimes I think there isn’t a curve anymore and I’m just not getting it!
SJS, Yes, it is for the OUOGO Grand Vitesse. I'm not sure what the Grand Vitesse is. Well, I feel better now. Our luggage will be about 1/2" to 3/4" too big on 2 of the dimensions. I hope it passed to go on board for free as I didn't pay extra for stowing it. I can't believe trains are now charging extra for baggage like the airlines! I suppose it being a holiday weekend the fares are more. Would we be smart to go to Strasbourg the day before? Is there any chance we wouldn't get on the regional train that morning, being the last day in the holiday weekend?
Ouigo Grand Vitesse is SNCF's answer to budget airlines. No onboard services, limitations on luggage, need to check in 30 minutes ahead. But otherwise as fast as TGVs. Right now showing 178 EUR, so $200 sounds right.
Yes, Colmar to Strasbourg is about 15€ each way per person. Sometimes there are 9€ tickets. There is a regional pass on weekends and holidays that covers up to 5 people for unlimited rides for 39.10€. This is a great deal if you are going RT, but not a deal for one way.
You may enjoy going to Strasbourg the day before your train from Strasbourg to Paris. We really liked Strasbourg and it may be less stressful going on the regional train with luggage the day before.
