Train bus or car for southwest france?

In April, we plan to travel from lyon to sarlat la caneda and then on to toulouse. I had thought we would take train or bus to sarlat, rent a car while there, and take a train or bus to toulouse (which will be on a sunday). But i am confused by info i have on train schedules. Sncf and rome2rio show that the trips are 2-3 hrs, but then when you look at ticket options, they are vastly longer travel times. Help! If we must, we could rent a car for all of that, but i prefer not to

There is no train or bus from Lyon to Sarlat.

The only way to get to Sarlat is by TER regional train from Bordeaux, and to get to Bordeaux from Lyon you would have to take a Lyon →Paris train, then a Paris → Bordeaux train (!)

So, from Lyon, take a train to Toulouse (4 hours journey) and rent a car at Toulouse Matabiau station where you will find the main rental companies. (open on Sundays)

From Toulouse it's about 2h30 drive to Sarlat via 90% motorway

Make sure your accommodation in Sarlat has a dedicated parking space. Parking is tight/non-existent in the center of town.
