Towns in or between Nice and Provence for a nature/walk lover in April

Hello,

I am looking for a town/village to base myself for a couple of days between Nice and Provence. I will be spending almost a week in Nice and then going to Provence for a week long bike tour that meets at the Marseille airport or Carpentras (where is starts).

I'll be going in April and am looking for a place and it's surrounds to explore on foot or by public transportation. I am looking for a place that is budget friendly, not a big city and ok for someone who only speaks English. Any suggestions?

First off, Nice itself is in Provence, but that's not reponsive to your question.

Valbonne is a delightful, though touristy, little town not too far from Nice where you can enjoy scenic village life and have no problem finding English-speaking waiters and shopkeepers. Whether it's sufficiently budget friendly is another matter, as Provence overall is not what I'd consider a cheap place to visit. Valbonne offers the benefit of being on the way towards Marseilles after leaving Nice.
