Town/Cities to visit after our 6 day cycling trip, "Bicycling Bordeaux & the River Dordogne"???

After our bike tour we have a few days in the Bordeaux area before we head home to Canada.

We are looking at visiting some of the towns in the Bordeaux area. We are considering a day trip up to Biarritz and are also considering visiting Periguex, where we might stay overnight. Does anyone have comments on these towns or other towns they would recommend? We especially enjoy cities with a historical interest. We will have lots of opportunities to visit vineyards and do wine tastings during our cycling tour, so wine tasting is not a high priority on this part of our trip (although we will probably still enjoy some glasses of wine!)
Any hotel / restaurant suggestions would be appreciated as well.

BTW We used the Rick Steve's France book while we did a walking trip in Alsace in 2013 and found it very helpful. Unfortunately we cannot find much on the Bordeaux area.

Biarritz has never rung my bell, Bayonne has several times. Perigueux and surrounds beats both.

If you want to head upstream on the Garrone, when and Moissac are both pretty good.

La Rochelle trumps them all by a long shot.

Reportedly, Mr Steves does not believe in Bordeaux. It's still worth a good two or three days in itself.

If you are willing to go as far as Periguex, how about Sarlat or LaRoque or Beynac?

If "History" includes prehistory, how about the Vezere valley?
