Tours (town in France)

Need recommendation for hotel in Tours. Is it mostly for relaxing or sightseeing? Do not want to rent a car.
We are travelling from Nice to Paris and want to stop somewhere to see interests within a week's time. We will have completed tour RS of Loire Valley from Chartres to Nice, and would like to visit Avignon, the Alsace region and possibly Tours. Any must-sees in these regions? Any info is much appreciated.

That's zig-zagging all over the place. How much time do you have?

Hotels in Tours - I rarely make hotel recommendations without an expressed budget window, and it is not clear that you are even going to Tours, but these are roughly comparable in price:

Best Western

Hotel du Manoir

Oceania Hotel

Ferdinand Hotel

I can also recommend this chambre d´hôte:

la Maison Jules

These hotels are all centrally located, close to Place Plumereau and Tours Centre, the train station. The Office de Tourisme from which you may book tours and excursions is just across the street from Tours Centre.

Among the remaining choices of locations to visit, Avignon might be the most logical, as it is the transportation hub of western Provence. From Avignon, you have easy access to Arles, St Rémy, Isle sur la Sorgue, les Baux de Provence, and a number of other well known destinations.

I would suggest if you decide on spending a few days in Tours, do a day trip or so to Saumur, well worth it, the wine, the special cuisine and the historical museum, if you're into that.
