Touring in the Loire Valley

Planning a visit mid September- mid October from Paris to Tours and want to include a few days outside of Tours visiting wineries and chateaus. Is a rental car the best option? Public transportation available to Amboise/Chenonceaux? Thanks! Annemarie

You can take a train to both Amboise and Chenonceaux (I have done both), although most people will probably recommend that you rent a car or take a minibus tour from Tours.
