Tour or Marseille and Cassis from an airport hotel possible?

I will traveling through Provence next summer basing in Avignon and Aix en Provence and have a very early flight leaving from Marseille. I am thinking about getting a room at the airport early the day before I leave and venturing out from there to do a day tour of Marseille and Cassis. I know there is direct bus transportation from Aix to the airport but I think I would be more comfortable with having a room at the airport the nights before, plus the cost of the room would be dramatically less expensive than the hotel I am staying in Aix. Can anyone comment on the best way to do this? I want to do a standard tour vs a very expensive private one. Would there be any standard tours with pick up and drop off at the Marseille airport or would I need to venture into Marseille to pick one up? Any advice on how to do this most efficiently and inexpensive would be appreciated.

If your room is at one of the airport hotels, you have the possibility to take the airport shuttle from the airport to downtown, for 8 euros one-way (and I think there's a special round-trip fare). This drops you at the main train station in Marseille, Gare Saint Charles, from where it's easy to tour on your own, or you could join a tour (I know nothing about tour options).

I am familiar with the water tours that go see the Calanques along the coast from Marseille to Cassis.
I do not know if these operate off season. Cassis is quite small, quaint and relaxed. It is by the water and is cafe oriented more than anything else. Not sure if u can get off and then take another boat back however the tours are up to 4 hrs. And there are a selection to choose from. If the sea is calm it is a lovely trip.
