I would love to visit this castle after my RS tour in May of 2025. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I don’t know if we should use a tour group or it’s easy to go on our own for a day trip.
I took an 10-year-old and a 18-year-old there almost a decade ago and it was easy. We took a train from Gare de Lyon and a taxi from the Melun train station to the Chateau and the reverse to return to Paris. We did a great self-guided tour. The only hiccup was that I had left my drivers license at the hotel and could not rent a golf cart without it. The golf cart would have been nice because there was a decent amount of walking (and whining) to see the grounds. My children still mention the story of the Chateau and how Fouquet lost it and they are 18 and 26 now so it made an impression on them -- that and how nice the staff at the Chateau were to us.
I would agree. I've been twice on my own from Paris and it's easy-peasy. Beautiful chateau and nice because it's rarely crowded. Also, it's not one of those exhausting all-day trips like some others from Paris.
Some times of year there is a shuttle from one of the train stations and that would make it easier -- I am thinking maybe not in May -- but look at the web site. We did it by taking the train to Melun and then a taxi to the Chateau -- it was not that easy to get a taxi but we managed and the people at the chateau got us one to get back. You are better off without being on a tour once there IMHO
I was there in November for the first day of their Christmas Extravaganza and it was one of the most incredible experiences. I will be going to in April 2025 again.
For my November trip there was a bus from the TS to the Chateau. It is an extra fee but you can purchase it on the chateau website. At that time I walked straight out of the train station, straight down the street, stopped at the bus stop and the bus came, not on time but it was the first day. it is a timed bus. No tour needed.
