Tour guide tipping in Paris

Hello! We were thrilled to be able to book a tour guide for a day trip to Paris. We booked directly with them, and they are charging 600 euros for a six hour private tour. Given their reputation, we are very comfortable with that cost. Should we plan on adding an additional tip to that amount? Appreciate any advice about what is customary.

No additional tip necessary. It's a fair price for a contracted service.

At 100€ per hour, I should consider the tip included.

Tour guides make most of their money from tips. To not tip would be very rude. Consult Les Frenchies on Facebook for more info. Tipping comes up all the time. I took this information from their page where they posted a chart on tipping etiquette.

Cafe: people often leave the change. Round to nearest figure
Tour guide: 10-20 euro. 10% for high quality tour
Taxi: 1-2 euro if there was assistance with baggage, otherwise tip not expected
Restaurant: 1-2 euro. Fancy place 5% if service was great
Porter: 1-2 euro is appreciated if they helped with baggage
Bar: same as cafe. 1 euro if bartender was great
Coat check: 1 euro is expected at fancier venues
Doorman: 1-2 euro if they get you a cab or other assistance

The tour guide mentioned in OP question is making and keeping every bit of that 100 euros an hour
Absolutely no need for additional tip

A tour guide working for a “free walking tour” or large tour operator might deserve a tip

I wouldn’t follow Les Frenchies on this since they have arrangements for only certain tours and guides on the $ite. One of them is a family member who gives expensive tours, so there’s a profit to be made saying 10%. In fact, on most of this, it’s opinion, not a rule. The chart may be comforting for visitors to follow, but it’s still the opinion of people running an American company for American clients even if the product is French. And yes, I know he was born in France, but he left at 18 to work in the US.

We often hire private, independent guides (never through one of the clearinghouse websites) when we're in other countries and pay similar prices. In fact, although we live in France, I hired a private guide here in France when someone was visiting. The prices were fair for the independent guides in each case, so we didn't tip.

I agree with Elizabeth about Les Frenchies. Their YouTube videos are interesting but I do not agree with their tipping advice as I feel it's self-serving with their connections to their "recommended" tour guides.

I would not tip to a private guide charging 600E. They are getting the whole amount, not having to share with a company owner.

I agree that those giving tours without a set fee should indeed be tipped. But France is not the US and many outside the US tipping culture consider throwing crazy money at those who provide service unnecessary, even vulgar.

Most of what the Frenchies talk about, I take with a grain of salt.
