We will be taking a private 1/2 day tour in Normandy next week and would like to know how to handle tipping the guide. I looked for info in the RS France book but only see tipping advice for restaurants and "services" but not specifically for tours or similar. Assuming the guide does a great job, which I expect since he was recommended through RS, how should we tip? We are paying in cash so want to make sure we have enough on hand.
Thanks much!
I would tip at least 10%, and more if the do a spectacular job.
Unlike the US, France does not have a tipping culture. If the guide is an employee or volunteer through an agency, then I think a tip would be appropriate. However, if the guide is self-employed and you are paying him/her directly, then I wouldn't think a tip would be expected. You might "treat" the guide to a coffee or glass of wine, however.
I agree France is not a tipping culture, however I also think it makes a difference if guide is a volunteer or employee, or a private self employed guide. I would tip a self employed guide 10-15 euros for both of you( not each) because he has already built in his own , no doubt ,hefty wage( bet tour is very pricey!) , but I would give an employee 20-30 for both, not each. This assumes its a GOOD tour. Do not tip for a poor experience, that would be being a sucker!
It is not unusual to buy them a drink or lunch, if you buy a self employed guide a nice lunch I would tip nothing( as lunch will be about 15-30 euros anyways) ,
