Does a person need a tour guide for Versailles? I was going to go during the middle of the week. Get up early in the morning, take the train. I will have a Paris Pass witch gives me free entrance.

Admission to the Chateau includes an audio guide, as well as Rick also has a downloadable audio guide. If you do book a guided tour in English, either on the chateau web site or in person at their office for Visites Conferences, then you go through a different security check, avoiding a long line, and get access to a few additional rooms. Rick says to ignore the tours hawked at the train station.
