Tour de France 2020

Today was the day Tour fans have been looking forward to since, well, the end of the last Tour - the official announcement of the 2020 route! Here it is, in case anyone wants to go - or avoid the crowds.

It starts with two days in Nice, flirts with the southern Alps, makes its way to the Pyrenees for only two days, then a rest and two race days along the Atlantic near La Rochelle. From there it crosses central France to Lyon, a week in the Alps, and an Individual Time Trial up La Planche des Belles Filles.

Most of these places aren't covered in the Rick Steves books. So, those who know - Where would you go to see the Tour? What place would you be happy to spend, say, a week in? Take a day or two to see the Tour, but also see and do other things in the area?

I would like to see the tour in Switzerland again and in Italy in the Dolomites or around Lake Como.

We followed the last week in 2003 and 2010. Flew into Paris, drove down to the Pyrenees area, saw several stages, visited Basque areas of Spain and France. Bordeaux. Loire and Brittany a bit then back to Paris. Stayed near Bayonne for three days while in Southwest, then other places the rest of the week.
