Toulouse to Tossa de Mar (Spain) roadtrip 2.5 days suggestions?

Hello,
Family of 5 (three kids ages 10/12/13) from the USA. Renting a car in Toulouse and driving towards northeastern Spain. We have 3 days, 2 nights to get to Tossa de Mar in northeastern Spain via rental car.

Can you give me some stops of interest on the way and even suggestions of where to overnight (hotel). We will definitely stop at Carcassonne for a few hours on the first day, and then continue on. Narbonne seems like a good first overnight stop that has interesting history and things of interest. I'm open to hearing different ideas or even different routes. Wouldn't mind some of the coastal/beach areas since I have kids and they would like to be outdoors. I also chose to rent a car versus train/us/fly for this part of our trip, so we could slow things down and interact with the locals on a much slower pace for a few days.

Thank you in advance,
Eric

In addition to Carcassonne and Narbonne, you have Collioure and Banyuls in France, Cadaques and Figueres for Salvador Dali sites, Castellfollit de la Roca, Rupit, Girona,
Avoid Lloret de Mar because it seemed like the Atlantic City of the Costa Brava.

If you would like a wilder beach and sea atmosphere, that might appeal to kids rather than that of a city like Narbonne, you can stay a night in Gruissan in a chalet on stilts (it's right next to Narbonne) .

Here is an example of chalets for rent:

As Bets mentioned, Collioure and Banyuls are also must-sees in the region. But be careful if your trip is in summer (July / August), there may be a lot of tourists and also a lot of traffic on roads and highways.

Where are you headed after Tossa de Mar? Does your trip end in Spain, or will you loop back into France? Picking up a car in France and dropping it in Spain is likely to incur a very high international drop charge (hundreds of euros).

Do not miss Collioure, France a short distance north of Barcelona, on the sea. Charming town with an art history past.
