toulouse for 4 days in end of may

hello all,

just wanted to pick your brains regarding areas to stay in toulouse. will be arriving from madrid at tls. looking at airbnbs and want to pick a place somewhere between the main train station and the center. i realize toulouse is a big city and may not have a center per se and has multiple stations. will be there for 4 full days not including travel days. going to avignon by train afterward. hoping to do a couple of day trips carcassonne and albi but flexible. public transportation is the only option and interests are art and architecture. any tips on using the metro/bus system? multi-day pass? suggestions and tips are most welcome.

thanks.

Toulouse is the fourth city in France in terms of population but it is a very easy city to explore on foot (at least the historic center).

If you are looking for accommodation, this historic center is concentrated around the Place du Capitol (the town hall).

Regarding the location of this accommodation I recommend that you avoid the immediate proximity of the Matabiau train station (it's not a nice area and these days there is a lot of construction work)

Toulouse is a very young city with many students who like to party late at night. Below is a walking route showing the area where you should avoid staying if you want to go to bed before 1 a.m. (and sleep)

In case you haven't already looked at it:

Regarding transport, if you stay 4 days including 2 day trips to Albi and Carcassonne, I don't think you will need a pass for the other two days you will spend in the pink city. But here is the Tisseo website (public transport in Toulouse)

There is a podcast called Join Us in France, run by a woman named Annie Sargent, who lives in Toulouse. She has a number of episodes on Toulouse and the surrounding area, so you may want to check it out. You should not miss the Victor Hugo Covered Market (with very good restaurants on the second level for lunch). The Airbus museum/factory is also in Toulouse, and makes for an interesting outing if you want a break from art and architecture.
