I am going to be in Toulouse for 4 days in August.
1) Can someone recommend a good guidebook of the area, including sites and history?
2) I am thinking of spending 2 days in Toulouse and 2 days nearby. What are the some of the best excursions nearby, say within an an hour or so by train?
3) Any other Toulouse advice would be most welcome.
Thank you!
The Michelin Green guide covers it.
Albi, Carcasonne, and Cahors are each about one hour by train, all on different rail lines. That's the order of priority that I'd give them, too; Albi first. The main sight in Cahors is a Medieval bridge; Rick doesn't spend much time in the rest of the town, but I'm mentioning it because it's the same travel distance as the others. I have not been to Toulouse or to any closer stops that the train serves.
These podcasts/websites cover much of what you are interested in and I find them highly entertaining. Enjoy!

Thank you so much, Laura and Matt. Those things are exactly what I was looking for and very helpful. Kent, I tried to find the Michelin Green Guide you. Mentioned, but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere.
The Michelin guide covering the Toulouse area is "Pyrenees Toulouse Gers" avaiable in French on Amazon.com for a high price. However, many affiliate sellers have it for much less. You'll need to see if some have it in English-- if necessary or amazon.ca. It is the most comprehensive for what you want.
Thank you, Bets. I found it. I did find it for less on Amazon.ca.
