Use Viamichelin to find itineraries and find out the cost of the toll.

Here are the two options for a Bayeux → Amboise by gasoline car at :

https://tinyurl.com/3xja59bv

The cost of the toll for the one with toll is €29.6

All toll booths accept credit cards and contactless payment.

Take lanes with the credit card symbol (or coin symbol if paying with cash)

Do not take the lanes with the inscription "Télépéage" and no other symbols, they are generally at the right or left ends of the toll and reserved for those who have a payment transponder.

We’ll be traveling from Bayeux to Amboise by the major (toll) highways. Can you tell me if the signage is easily understood? Thank you

Janet,
I always use viamichelin.com when plotting out my routes/trips. It offers usually 2-3 options and tells kilometers, travel time and toll amounts. Take the time with a grain of salt because it doesn't account for gas/food/comfort stops. It is a very user friendly site.

We didn't drive to Amboise, but used google maps and also had a gps navigation in our rental car this past spring. We drove all over Normandy and Brittany and found driving and navigating very easy. And I still marvel at the beautiful conditions of the roads; nicely paved, no potholes. Everything was well marked. The toll booths were very easy to navigate and to tap in/out with your credit card.

As an aside, we drove from Bayeux to Amboise ( and many, many other places) and decided not to use the toll roads. Not because of the cost, but because we really enjoyed passing through the small towns on the slower routes. It's way more interesting and satisfying. Enjoy your trip!

Check viamichelin.com route planner. It will give you route times and costs including tolls (plus a gas estimate based on your car).

Will your card work? I think a tap card will work now. Last time I travelled (2018), I had trouble with my cards in France (pre-tap). I was always able to get something to work but I often went through every card, twice, before something finally worked.

It's good to have cash handy (smaller than 20 euro bills, one/two euro coins are best).

Edit: Driving is easy and well signed. Cheapest gas is at Supermarkets (usually automatic, sometimes staffed). Easiest gas is at "truck stops" along the tollways (always staffed if you need help).

Between Caen and Le Mans, if you have time, I would recommend leaving the expressway at Falaise and driving via Carrouges (beautiful castle) and Saint-Ceneri & Saint-Leonard des Bois (pretty landscape, cute villages) before joining the motorway at Beaumont sur Sarthe.

If you use Waze you can program it to avoid the toll roads. This may add to your travel time, and you'll drive some interesting roads, but you'll see places you never expected.
